Ballindooley Castle
Avenues to Independence would like to thank Mary Frances Hegarty of
Park Ridge, Illinois, for her generous contribution of a week-long
stay at the Ballindooley Castle, located just outside Galway City.
The castle
is presumed to have been built in the
late 15th
century (approximately 1480). It
is a Norman castle and was probably built by the DeBurgo
(Burke) Family. The first written record of ownership was to a
Redmond Regough Burke.
It has the distinction of having been
shelled by the British gunboat Helga during the 1916 uprising.

The castle was restored to its current grandeur in
1989. At the
time the current
ownership
purchased the castle, it had been vacant for approximately two
hundred years.
Restoration was
completed in 1990.

Its
15th century
grandeur has the addition of a few
21st
century conveniences such as a
modern kitchen, bathrooms and laundry
facilities.
The
castle has the amenities to sleep 4-6 guests.
Ballindooley is the perfect location from which to tour the Irish
countryside. For more information please contact:
